Who Uses our Service ?

CDA Trust LTD's service users come from all walks of life. Substance misuse in Ireland is a complex problem and the ever growing variety of available substances coupled with the economic downturn has only added to the problem.

CDA Trust LTD is committed to supporting research that highlights the drug and alcohol problem in Ireland and we are one of the treatment centers that participates in the Health Research Board’s, National Drug Treatment Reporting System.

In 2011 CDA Trust LTD received the bulk of its referrals from the Probation Service, the Department of Justice, the HSE, Social Services and Community GPs. We also received a significant number of self referrals. Below is a statistical breakdown of clients supported by CDA in 2011 by the client’s primary presenting problem.

Treatment statistics for 2011

Reported Substance Use:

The chart below demonstrates that alcohol is by far the most common cited problem by those accessing CDA Trust Ltd’s support programme. There was however a slight increase in heroin use amongst clients in 2011 and it is also interesting to note that headshop products are still being cited as an issue even after enactment of the Psychoactive Substances Act of 2011.

The chart belows shows the age/gender ranges of clients presenting to CDA Trust Ltd in 2011. Most heroin problems were cited by males in the 25-35 age bracket, with problematic cannabis use most frequently reported by males in the 15-24 age bracket.

The chart below shows the length of time for which clients typically engaged with our service, with the majority falling into the 3 month+ range.

Reason for discharge:

Encouragingly almost half of all those who successfully engaged with CDA were drug/alcohol free and stable at point of discharge. Making the successful adjustment to a drug/alcohol free lifestyle can be extremely challenging and individuals often make several concerted attempts, sometimes spanning several years, before they can successfully achieve those goals. CDA Trust Ltd is committed to supporting clients to achieve their goals through ongoing case-management and key-working. Where clients drop out of our support programme prematurely, CDA Trust Ltd exhausts all reasonable means of re-establishing contact with these clients before they are discharged. Clients who do drop out can access our service again subject to waiting list demands.

Please note that the majority of our clients are poly substance users and the above figures only represent the client’s perceived primary problem substance. All the above clients successfully accessed support and the total figure only therefore represents those actually seeking treatment and able/willing to engage with our service. Less than half of the total individuals referred to our service successfully accessed support and the above figures should therefore not be taken as an indication of the full extent of the problem.
